India's First Android Device Soon

India's First Android Device Soon

Hyderabad based Notion Inc, a startup formed by six IITans and an MBA graduate, might just be the company that would make the country's first Android device.

The tablet PC from the company will feature Nvida's Tegra processor and will run Android as mentioned earlier. The yet unnamed device will feature a writable 10.1-inch touchscreen and will weigh in at just 770grams. It will be feature packed with technologies like Blue tooth, a 3 megapixel camera, video recording, USB charging and a data storage capacity of 32GB all crammed in. Then, there is the much sought after Wi-Fi connectivity as well.

It's Lithium Ion batteries would be able to power the device for almost 48 hours, claims the company. The Notion tablet PC is expected to cost less than $400 (Rs. 18,640 approx.), and could be in your hands by June 2010, if all goes as planned.

India blocks millions of mobiles for security reasons

Millions of Indian mobile phones with no valid unique identification code have been blocked for security reasons.
The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a 15-digit code which appears on the operator's network whenever a call is made.
The absence of this number makes it impossible to trace either the caller or the phone or to access call details.
Indian intelligence agencies say phones without the code have been used in attacks by militant groups.
Mobile phones without the code were blocked at midnight - operators were asked to bar calls to them "in the wake of increased threat perception from militants".

Cheap
It is estimated that India has more than 25 million phones without codes.
Phones with no codes or invalid numbers are mostly cheap, unbranded phones.
Millions are manufactured in India or imported, mostly from China.
Correspondents say these phones are popular because they are usually much cheaper than the branded ones.
Many phone subscribers said they were being wrongly penalised because they were not aware that every handset had to have a code.
The Cellular Operators' Association of India has asked the government to extend the deadline for blocking the numbers so that it can install identity numbers on unbranded devices.
According to estimates by the Indian Cellular Association, unbranded phones account for nearly 30% of all sales in India.
India has the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world, with more than 488 million subscribers.
Every month millions of new subscribers are added to the list.

India to have mobile number portability from Dec 31

India will introduce mobile number portability on Dec 31, a move that could further intensify the stiff competition in the world's fastest-growing wireless market and push call charges lower.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which allows users to retain their number even if they switch operators, will be introduced in two phases, the telecoms regulator said, first in the metro cities and the so-called Category A telecom zones and in other areas by March 20.

MNP helps in "increasing competition between the service providers and acts as a catalyst for the service providers to improve their quality of service," the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said on its website.

The regulator also notified certain charges associated with MNP and said switching charges for users must not exceed 19 rupees (U.S. 40 cents).

For the TRAI order, see http://link.reuters.com/pej72g

Four new firms including ventures of international telecom operators Telenor, Etisalat and Batelco are set to start services in India this year and MNP would make it easy for them to lure existing subscribers.
